Kante shy to hold World Cup trophy after France victory over Croatia

France star N'Golo Kante was "too shy" to ask to hold the World Cup after France's 4-2 final victory as Steven N'Zonzi had to step in to help him, The Sun reports.

N'Zonzi told his team-mates to let the Chelsea midfielder have a go as the jubilant French side celebrated in the Moscow rain.

The 27-year-old was in superb form all through the tournament during Didier Deschamps' side's march to the final.

But he had a below par performance evening at the Luzhniki Stadium, after being swamped by Croatia's midfielders and back-tracking forwards.

And after he got cautioned, Deschamps substituted him for Nzonzi after 55 minutes before Les Bleus went on to win 4-2.

But in the aftermath of France's celebrations of their second World Cup, it appeared Kante was struggling to get a turn with the trophy.

Kante who won league titles with Leicester and the Blues in consecutive seasons, is known for being shy and reserved.

Kante was shown on France's team bus on the way away from the stadium looking embarrassed as his team-mates sang hilarious songs in tribute to his ability.

The squad sang: "N'Golo Kante, N'Golo Kante, he's short, he's beautiful, he's the one that stopped Lionel Messi, N'Golo Kante."

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that were crowned champions of the world following a 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Mario Mandzukic scored own goal in the first half as the Ivan Perisic leveled matters. Antoine Griezmann scored from the spot to make the score 2-1 to France.

Paul Pogba increased the lead to 3-1 with a sublime finish before 19-year-old netted the fourth. Mandzukic's cheap goal was not enough to rescue his team from the 4-2 defeat.
