Costa angry with Hierro for letting Koke take a penalty against Russia

Spanish striker, Diego Costa, reportedly warned Fernando Hierro not to let his club teammate, Koke, take a penalty against Russia, according to reports in Spain.

The former Chelsea striker was seen chatting with his boss and skipper Sergio Ramos before the shootout and apparently asked "Is he okay?" before Koke replied "I'm fine".

Koke then stepped up to take the third kick which was weak as Igor Akinfeev saved with ease as he wrote his name into his country's history books with two saves to book a quarter-final spot.

After the miss, Costa was seen gesticulating towards Hierro allegedly saying "I told you" and the duo later exchanged words on the field.

The 29-year-old plays with Koke at Atletico Madrid and may have had some insight into his 26-year-old team-mate's mental state.

On the midfielder's effort, BBC pundit Cesc Fabregas said: "It’s not difficult for the goalkeeper.

"It's one of the worst penalties you can have. Not in the middle, but on the side, halfway."

Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas also missed his spot-kick for Spain in the thrilling last-16 clash which sent Russia into the last eight.

The hosts are set to face Croatia on Saturday looking for an unlikely semi-final place after not given a chance before the tournament.

Luka Modric and his teammates needed a shoot-out to beat Denmark and both sides will fancy their chances.

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that Croatia defeated Denmark on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Mathias Joergensen set the ball rolling right in the first minute of the match but the lead was canceled out by Mario Mandzukic three minutes later.

Modric's extra time penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel to send the match into shoot-outs which the Croats eventually won.
