A clash between some operatives of the Lagos state taskforce and a set of youths in the Oshodi area of the state have reportedly left three motorcycle riders dead.
The spokesman of the taskforce, Taofeek Adebayo, confirmed the development to newsmen. However, he denied the involvement of the officials in the clash.
Sources who witnessed the incident claimed that the victims were hit by stray bullets shot by security operatives with the intention of warding off the rascally youths.
The Guardian gathered that one of the youths had a bet on the Nigeria-Argentina match (Tuesday, June 26) with an official of the task force.
After the match which favoured Argentina, both parties were said to be on their way to the bus stop in Oshodi when the officer reportedly refused to hand over his part of the deal to the area boy, an act which angered the area boy and provoked him to stab the official in the face.
On Wednesday, June 27, the officer alongside his colleagues returned to the base of the area boys on a mission to arrest the area boy that had earlier stabbed the officer. This led to a clash between the groups. In the course of the mayhem, the officers then shot stray bullets which hit three motorcyclists.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Tobi, informed newsmen that the incident had been a cause of unrest in the area and has affected its economic life.
Tobi said: “I got here this morning and heard one of the Oju-Irin boys had a clash with a task force officer after they both placed bet on Nigeria vs Argentina match, which did not go the officer’s way. But he refused to release the money, and then the area boy stabbed him.
“The matter has gone beyond how minor we thought it was. The officer came here with his colleagues and as they were trying to scare the boys away, they shot stray bullets that hit and killed three Okada riders.
Members of the motorcycle association in the area have refused to speak with newsmen on the the sad development.
