But it appears that the chaos that marked their buildup to the must-win clash with the African side spilled over onto the pitch in St Petersburg on Tuesday night.

Argentina held a press conference without Sampaoli on Sunday in the wake of reports that senior players such as Messi and Javier Mascherano have lost faith in him.

The Argentina FA chief executive ,Claudio Tapia, denied suggestions Sampaoli was to be sacked immediately.

But reports also have it Mascherano admitted that senior players had gone to FA officials on Friday night to discuss issues about tactics.

It is thought that the Argentina squad lost faith in Sampaoli for playing three defenders at the back after the 3-0 defeat by Croatia last week.

On Tuesday's win against the West Africans, they deployed a 4-3-3 formation in order to bring the best out of Messi.

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that Croatia got the better of Iceland by 2-1 in their last match in Group D.

Milan Badelj opened the scoring in the 53rd minute while Aron Gunnarsson converted a spot kick to level the scores.

Ivan Perisic scored a late winner to send the Eastern Europeans through to the next stage of the competition.
