Argentina star man Lionel Messi has revealed that they were made to suffer to earn a vital 2-1 victory over the Super Eagles.

Nigeria came back through a penalty scored by Victor Moses but Marcos Rojo sealed the win four minutes from time.

“We suffered a lot,” Messi said on FIFA.com.

“There was a lot at stake. It was a huge relief, a relief for all of us. We didn’t think we would suffer this much.”

Argentina will take on France in the round of 16 and the 30-year-old said they will be prepared for a tough game.

“We have watched every single France game. We follow every game. France is a very good team with skilled individual players. They have very fast players who can really make a difference. I know what we will have to do. It will be a very tough game, no doubt.”

Jorge Sampaoli's side have been poor in Russia so far and the fact they face Didier Deschamps team in the last 16 means they will seriously need to improve.

Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Rojo has revealed Messi encouraged the team to stay calm during half time.

Rojo, who scored in the previous World Cup against Nigeria in Brazil in 2014 claims his goal was inspired by the Barcelona man.

He said: "Messi came up to us and told us to calm down and not be stressed. We felt nervous and that message helped us a lot and gave me personally a huge confidence boost.

"Messi is our captain and he's the best captain in the world, it was amazing to score that goal.

"Messi told everyone that it was either life or death. It could've gone badly. We could've conceded but Leo was stubborn.

"He told me to run forward. Even [Javier] Mascherano. He told everyone to attack no matter what. He truly read the game and risks. He's a leader. The best."
