Egypt's Essam El-Hadary becomes oldest player to feature at World Cup

- The 45-year-old is now the oldest player ever to appear in the tournament as he starts against Saudi Arabia on Monday, June 25

Essam El-Hadary on Monday, June 25, became the oldest player to feature in the history of the FIFA World Cup as his was included in Egypt's starting XI to face Saudi Arabia.

Although the appearance of the 45-year-old legendary goalkeeper did not change anything because Egypt had already been sent out of Russia 2018 after losing their first two games.

But his name will remain in the history books of the world football governing body as the oldest player to start a match in a World Cup game.

El-Hadary has spent the largest portion of his club career with Al-Ahly with whom he won eight Egyptian Premier League titles, four Egypt Cups, four Egyptian Super Cups, four CAF Champions League titles, three CAF Super Cups, one Arab Club Champions Cup, and two Arab Super Cups.

Essam has also won the Africa Cup of Nations titles four times and was named the tournament's best goalkeeper on three occasions.

He was born in Kafr al-Battikh in 1973, and started playing for his local club before being signed by Second Division club Damietta at age 17.

Earlier, had reported how Russia who are the host of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualified for the round of 16 of the championship after beating the Pharaohs of Egypt 3-1 in their second Group A game.

Russia took the lead in this match in the 47th minute when Egyptian defender Ahmed Fathi scored against his own goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawi.

Denis Cheryshev scored the second goal for Russia in the 59th minute, and three minutes later, Artem Dzyuba scored the third goal. Mohamed Salah scored Egypt's only goal in this tie.
