- The Lagos state government has promised to link Bariga to Third Mainland Bridge
- The governor of Lagos state said residents who will be affected by the upgrade would be adequately compensated
- According to the governor, the residents would also need to exercise some patience during the construction period
Following the ongoing upgrade and reconstruction of Odunsi Road, the Lagos state government has promised to link Bariga community to the Third Mainland Bridge.
This was announced by the state governor, Akinwumi Ambode, on Sunday, May 27. Speaking on the construction, Ambode said residents who will be affected by the upgrade would be adequately compensated.
Represented by the commissioner of information in Lagos, Kehinde Bamgbetan, the governor urged the residents to also exercise some patience during the construction period.
In their reaction, residents of the area appealed to the state government to create alternative routes, ensure water supply and consider those who had Certificates of Occupancy on their properties.
Punch reports that the residents also cautioned the state government against providing sub-standard road construction. They said they would not hesitate to protest or petition the government if such was done.
In his reaction, the governor said: “We will pay compensation and ensure that the interest of the residents is protected. We are not doing this to inconvenience them. We have been paying compensation in other places and we will be doing so in this place.
“For everything that we will be doing, we will place notices and issue directives to carry residents along. We seek your cooperation to enable the government to make Lagos more comfortable for us through the provision of adequate facilities. This is something that is very beneficial to members of this community."
Also speaking on the project, the commissioner for physical planning and urban development, Rotimi Ogunleye, said road would improve the standard of living in the area and accommodate the expected increase in traffic volume.
“The 1.5km road alignment begins from Tijani Ashogbon Street and terminates at Alhaji Ariyo and Akinbayo streets; this will eventually integrate the Bariga community with the Third Mainland Bridge and Oworo community, respectively.
“The road, when completed, will resolve traffic bottlenecks along Jagunmolu and Tijani Ashogbon, which are always critical at the peak period on a daily basis. This road will complement the upgraded/reconstructed Pedro, Igi-Olugbin and Okuta streets. The totality of the network of roads will bring improvement and succour to the citizenry," Ogunleye said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that federal government approved the construction of various road projects across Nigeria.
The approval was made during a Federal Executive Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 2.
Also, a four-member ministerial committee saddled with the responsibility of ensuring speedy completion of the east-west road in the Niger Delta and N142.5 billion for construction of roads across the country was inaugurated.
