2019: Parallel congresses, danger signal for APC - Baraje

- Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje has been speaking on the crisis in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

- He recently wrote a letter to the party on behalf of former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

- According to him, the recent parallel congresses of the party that was characterised with crisis is a danger signal for the APC

A member of the APC BoT, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, has warned that there is a looming crisis in the ruling party, if its leadership fails to address certain issues bugging the party.

Baraje, who recently wrote a warning letter to the APC leadership, on behalf of members of the defunct new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) cited the recent parallel congresses in the party as one that portends danger for the ruling party.

I have counted about 21 states where we had parallel congresses. My number may not be sacrosanct. But I counted 21 states and I was asking myself, how many states does APC control? You can imagine that.

“I have had the opportunity of chairing the PDP and the impression people have is that you don’t have internal democracy. As bad as people thought it was then, we never had 21 where we were having parallel congresses. As a matter of fact, there are three traditional parallel congresses or election areas when we were in PDP and we were always prepared for them.

“So, for the party in government that controls may be 22 to 24 states to have parallel congresses in 21 states, even in the states where we don’t control, there were parallel congresses, I think is a dangerous sign,” Baraje told Daily Sun.

The Kwara-born politician said it is a dangerous trend, even as he urged the party gets its act together before the 2019 general elections.

“It is history repeating itself. We have had this kind of thing several years ago but when the night comes, the bird shall go home to roost,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) has queried the APC for allowing crisis within its fold to fester ‎less than a year to the 2019 general elections.

The BCO chairman of Board of Trustees (BoT), Engrineer Markus Gundiri, blamed the APC as a party for getting entangled in internal crisis in a pre-election year.

“The APC has gone into so many problems, I don't know why. But we are going to campaign for him (Buhari) for the primaries and for his re-election. Don't get tired, there are so many things we need to do. We need to mobilise and reach out to all the voting units of this country,” he said.
