The defeat was United’s only setback during their preseason tour as the current world’s most expensive player was voted the man of the match.

His performance in that encounter further attracted his present employers to step up their interest in him – and it paid off before the window closed.

Before the game, Jose Mourinho’s men had beaten LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the process.
