- The exercise was held without any rancour as witnessed in some other states
- Dr Emmanuel Ndukwe emerged the elected state chairman after the exercise
Umuahia, the state capital of Abia state witnessed an unprecedented crowd of APC faithfuls as the party held its state congress today, Saturday, May 19.
Legit.ng gathered that the hitch-free exercise started with the state delegates welcoming the members of Abia state congress committee from Abuja led by secretary of the committee, Hajya Rabbi Gambari.
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, Hajiya Gambari said: “We are here for the rule of law, we will obey the rule of law, our party believes in the rule of law, we were sent by the national leadership of our party to conduct the state congresses.
“As we entered Umuahia we asked questions and were told that the right venue is in this place. As you can see some of our members are not here and we don't know where they are but as the secretary of this committee, the state congresses must go on and I enjoin all of you to continue to maintain the peace I have seen here today.”
The party faithfuls were led to the venue of the congresses by the newly elected chairmen from the 17 local government areas of the state leading their delegates and numerous supporters of the party who came to witness the momentous and historic occasion.
Great leaders of the party were also present among whom are High Chief Sir Ikechi Emenike, Chief Nduka Anyanwu; a national officer of the party and the board chairman of ASCON, Barrister Fabian Okonkwo; southeast zonal organizing secretary, Prince Paul Ikonne; former ACN gubernatorial candidate 2011, Chief Nwogu Nwogu; the NDDC commissioner for Abia state, Engineer Solomon Alozie representing the southeast at the Rural Electrification Commission and many other bigwigs of the party.
Dr Ndukwe led executive had earlier gotten an order of the court restraining the former chairman, Chief Donatus Nwamkpa from parading themselves as the state executives of the party in Abia state, and the order has not been vacated till today's congress.
Calling for nominations, a member of the congress committee from Abuja, Alhaji Garba Sanni said: “This is the authentic and confirmed party in Abia state and whatever we do here today, all the officers that will be elected here today will be recognized as the authentic executives of the party in Abia state by the national leadership of our great party because we were sent by the national leadership of the party to do the right thing and we shall do the right thing.
“I therefore urge you all to remain committed to the growth and ensure that APC wins Abia state in the elections of 2019.”
He therefore commenced the nomination processes beginning with the office of the state chairman and Dr Emmanuel Ndukwe emerged the elected state chairman. Chief Chidi Avajah as the state publicity secretary, while Engineer Mike Ozoemena and 24 other members of the executive committee aslo emerged during the exercise.
Legit.ng gathered that after the successful congresses, it was jubilation galore for members of the party in the state.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the APC and member of the ruling party's national convention committee, Engineer Preye Aganaba, has called on the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to call the Bayelsa state congress chairman, Mr Ahmed Usman to order over the purported ongoing congress in the state.
Aganaba said the national secretariat of APC had on Friday, May 18, ordered that Bayelsa state congress should be postponed to Monday, May 21, but stated that the congress committee chairman is currently conducting the exercise on the order of some persons in the state.
In a statement sent to Legit.ng on Saturday, May 19, Prince Aganaba urged the national chairman to quickly intervene in the matter so as not to throw the Bayelsa chapter of APC into crisis.
