If there is no change in the loss of water, then desmopressin may be administered to get the clear picture of two types of diabetes.

  • Normal condition – urine osmolality is more than 800 mOsm/kg (after desmopressin more than 800 mOsm/kg)
  • A defect in ADH production condition (neurogenic diabetes) – urine osmolality is less than 300 mOsm/kg (after desmopressin more than 800 mOsm/kg)
  • A defect in the kidney’s response condition (nephrogenic diabetes) – urine osmolality is less than 300 mOsm/kg (after desmopressin less than 500 mOsm/kg)
  • An excessive intake of fluid condition (polydipsia) - urine osmolality is more than 500 mOsm/kg (after desmopressin more than 500 mOsm/kg)
