Premier League giant, Arsenal, are in early negotiations with Borussia Dortmund to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The north London club have identified their defence as an area that requires strengthening following a poor season which saw them finish sixth.
Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football relations Raul Sanllehi are leading an overhaul of the squad.
And with the Gunners eyeing at least one central defender this summer, Sokratis looks likely to be their first summer signining.
The London Evening Standard reports that Arsenal are in talks to make the 29-year-old their first signing after Wenger’s departure.
It would reunite the Dortmund man with former team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the Emirates too.
Sokratis is also said to be available for just £15m, having failed to agree terms over a new contract at the Westfalenstadion.
But while the Greece defender appears poised to head to north London, a switch will be completed just yet.
The London Evening Standard add Arsenal’s incoming manager is likely to be consulted before any agreement is reached.
Mikel Arteta is expected to replace Wenger, with Juventus’ Massimiliano Allegri his strongest challenger for the job.
The Manchester City assistant coach, though, ticks the boxes of what Arsenal are looking for from their new manager.
Legit.ng previously reported that Premier League side Arsenal reportedly edging closer to sealing a £17.5 million deal for Borussia Dortmund ace Sokratis Papastathopoulos this summer according to The Sun.
The 29-year-old’s current contract expires in the summer of 2019, and the Gunners will be hoping they can add the Greek defender to their squad ahead of next season.
Should he agree to join the north London team this summer, he will be an immediate replacement for Laurent Koscielny, who is already getting tired of competitive football.
