- The Gunners have made Turkey international Caglar Soyuncu their major target this summer
- Laurent Koscielny is injured and won't be back early while Per Mertesacker is retiring this summer
- The club's head of recruitment Sven Mislintat believes the 21-year-old is good enough to represent the north Londoners in all competitions
Arsenal are reportedly planning to land SC Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu this summer according to Daily Star.
The 21-year-old ignored offers from Beşiktaş, Galatasaray and Sevilla to join the German League side in 2016, and he has since then been impressive for the club.
Meanwhile, Gunners’ new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has made the Turkey international his side’s first major target when the transfer window opens.
The north Londoners are short of defenders after losing Laurent Koscielny to injury during their Europa League semifinal clash against Atletico Madrid earlier this month, and Per Mertesacker is retiring from club football.
Arsene Wenger’s men conceded 51 Premier League goals this season, close to two times the number of goals champions Manchester City allowed in their net.
However, the Bundesliga outfit will not let their player leave unless they get a very good bargain from his suitors this summer.
Soyuncu has been likened to Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels due to his possession style of football, and it is also believed that he will thrive should he decide to join the Gunners.
Daily Star citing Telegraph claims Arsenal are prepared to sign the 21-year-old and are believed to be prepared to agree a deal worth up to £35m.
It adds that none of the managerial candidates interviewed for the vacant job were asked their opinion of Soyuncu.
Although the youngster is interesting other Premier League clubs, they "have been told in recent days that he is destined to join Arsenal."
"I've learnt a lot, especially tactically,” Soyuncu said earlier this year, regarding his time at Freiburg so far.
“For me it is like a puzzle - first the instructions are quite abstract, but in the end everything gets a practical dimension. That really excites me."
Should Arsenal be successful with their £35m offer, it would be a solid profit for Freiburg who signed the center-back for just £2.4m from Altinordu in 2016.
Soyuncu has a running contract with his German League side until the summer of 2021, and they might be considering cashing in on him if they get good offers from his suitors.
According to Squawka, the 21-year-old has made 25 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, and he has won 28 tackles this season with a success rate of 40%. He has made 58 interceptions, 81 clearances and 20 blocks.
He played 32 matches and scored two goals for Altınordu in his three year reign at the club before moving to Germany – where he has played 49 games with one goal from 2016 till date.
Legit.ng previously reported that the Gunners would make a move from Barcelona youngster Ousmane Dembele this summer.
The Frenchman, who joined the Catalans in a a five-year deal worth €105 million last year, was earlier in the season unhappy with his bench-warming role at the club.
He joined Barca from Borussia Dortmund after the Spanish champions had failed to hold on to Neymar.
