- PSG have jumped in the chase for Brazil midfielder Fred
- The 26-year-old is also wanted by Premier League runners up Manchester United this summer as a replacement for out-gone Michael Carrick
- He has a contract with Shakhtar Donetsk until the summer of 2023
Paris Saint Germain are reportedly planning to sign Manchester United target Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer.
The French League champions have been dominant in the Ligue 1 but are seriously forward to winning an European title.
United were said to have stepped up their interest in the Brazil international but PSG will now give the Red Devils a run for their money, as they hope to reinforce their midfield ahead of next season’s competitions.
The French team are hoping they can land the 25-year-old as a replacement for ageing Thiago Motta, who might leave at the end of this season.
According to Manchester Evening News, PSG seem not too comfortable with 33-year-old Lassana Diarra after joining them on a free transfer from Abu Dhabi club Al-Jazira in January, while they give Adrien Rabiot some level of competition in that position.
However, Shakhtar have revealed that Fred’s release clause is around €60million (£52.89m) and will not take anything less from his prospective buyers.
The Brazilian has a running contract with the Ukranian club until the summer of 2023 and his stock could soar later this month if he is included in Brazil coach Tite's World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, English news outlet MEN earlier reported that the Old Trafford outfit were close to signing the midfielder since their city rivals failed to land him during the winter transfer window.
Instead, Pep Guardiola turned his attention to £57 million Athletic Bilbao central defender Aymeric Laporte.
Fred's representatives were hopeful United would enter the bidding on deadline day and flew to England on the off-chance of finalising a transfer.
The Premier League are now said to be interested in signing Napoli midfielder Jorginho ahead of Fred, who was also said to be wanted by the Red Devils.
United made contact with Fred's representatives after the winter window closed and the former Internacional enforcer's Shakhtar performances have generated approval from club scouts.
The MEN revealed in March United manager Jose Mourinho is keen on making two central midfield additions amid the possible departure of Marouane Fellaini, as well as the retirement of Michael Carrick. Mourinho indicated on Sunday Carrick would be consulted on United's midfield additions.
"At the moment he is my assistant," Mourinho said. "He participates in the process and participating in the process means participating in every aspect.
"And of course I have to make the decisions but of course my assistants have an opinion and he has, obviously in relation to his position. a different vision than any other opinion than you can have from any scout or analysis department."
Mourinho hinted last month he could make a Brazilian signing amid interest in Juventus left-back Alex Sandro and Chelsea winger Willian.
Fred has only attained seven Brazil caps but was called up for their World Cup warm-up matches against Russia and Germany in March.
Fred played against David Moyes's United in their Champions’ League group stage defeat at Old Trafford in December 2013, having joined Shakhtar earlier that year. Fred served a worldwide doping ban after he tested positive for the banned substance hydrochlorothiazide at the 2015 Copa America.
The 26-year-old kicked off his senior career at Inter Milan, and in 2013, he joined the Ukraine topflight side.
While playing for the Italian side, he scored seven goals in 33 matches before quitting the club after two seasons.
Since he joined his present club, he has scored 10 goals in 99 appearances for the club.
