Mourinho wants Michael Carrick as his assistant at Manchester United

- Jose Mourinho has explained that Michael Carrick will become his assistant coach at Manchester United

- But that will be after the 36-year-old Englishman must have gotten his badges

- Carrick played his last game as a player for Manchester United on Sunday, May 13, 2018 against Watford

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has explained that Michael Carrick will become his assistant at Old Trafford as he retired after the club's victory over Watford on Sunday, May 13.

Jose Mourinho's long-time assistant, Rui Faria, is leaving Manchester United therefore ending a 17-year partnership with the United boss.

The ex Chelsea coach will not replace him, but instead wait for Carrick to be ready after the ex-England midfielder finished his playing career to join Mourinho’s backroom staff.

“I will organize my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn’t exist.

“I am going to have assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where we have specialists in different areas connected to performance.

“The particular reason is I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future when he has his badges. Then he can make the bridge between a player to an assistant.

“When Rui is leaving after 17 years, I have nobody in the world of football ready to be my assistant. So I prefer to structure my staff in a way where there is education and improvement.

“And when Michael has the pro licence badges along with the personality, friendship and honesty he has, I think it will be for him,'' Mourinho explained according to UK Sun.

Carrick began his career at West Ham United joining the youth team in 1997 and winning the FA Youth Cup two years later.

He was sent on loan twice during his debut season to Swindon Town and Birmingham City before securing a place in the first team by the 2000–01 season.

The Englishman joined Manchester United in 2006 and has played 464 games for the Red Devils.
