FG takes new measures against Ebola

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday, May 9, directed the federal Ministry of Health to step up surveillance against Ebola to keep the deadly virus away from Nigeria, The Nation reports. gathered that Isaac Adewole, the minister of health, briefed State House correspondents at the end of FEC meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Adewole, the council ordered steps to be taken to keep the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from coming to Nigeria.

The minister said that part of the new measures to be taken is screening passengers coming into the country.

“We want to assure Nigerians that the government is determined to keep the country safe.” he said.

According to an earlier report by, the Ebola deadly virus, that raged in some West African countries several years ago, has returned in the northwest part of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), killing 17 people.

Congo’s health ministry on Tuesday, May 8, described the fresh outbreak as a “public health emergency with international impact.”

“Twenty-one cases of fever with haemorrhagic indications and 17 deaths” have been recorded in Equateur province, it said, citing a notification to the ministry as of May 3.
