Villarreal set to land Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla this summer

- Spain international Santi Cazorla might stage a return to his former club Villarreal this summer

- The 33-year-old has been sidelined from action for more than 16 months after suffering a serious injury on one of his side's game in 2016

- Meanwhile, he returned to training for the first time last month and will be hoping to reach full fitness level before committing his future to any club

Spanish League side Villarreal are reportedly planning to sign Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla at the end of this season.

The Spaniard has not featured for the Gunners since late 2016 after suffering an Achilles tendonitis injury, which forced him to undergo 11 operations.

He however returned to training in April and has insisted that his injury woes are over as he hopes to return to action in the coming league season.

Meanwhile, Spanish news outlet AS reveals Villarreal owner Fernando Roig has informed the 33-year-old the door is opened to him at El Madrigali next season.

Carzola's contract with the north London side expires at this summer, and with his coach also leaving this month, he is not likely to get an extension at the club.

Though, he has insisted that he will not return to the pitch unless he is 100 per cent fit and able to play at the highest level.

The Spain international didn’t feature for his side all through this season which will end in a matter of weeks.

He joined the Gunners in the summer of 2012 from Malaga and he has scored 25 goals in 129 appearances for the Emirates Stadium side.

The Gunners midfielder spent four seasons at Villareal between 2007 and 2011, and became a household name at the club during his stay.

However, Roig claims his departure back then was the toughest to swallow but the decision was said to have been taken out of their hands due to the club's dire financial situation.

Cazorla started his career at Villarreal second team in 2003, where he scored four goals in 40 matches, and he was promoted to the club’s senior team the same year.

Having spent three seasons at the club, he joined Recreativo Huelva in the summer of 2006 for just one season where he was named Player of the Year before returning to El Madrigal in 2007.

In 2011, Arsenal made an offer to sign him but he preferred to Malaga that year, but a year after, he signed for the Gunners.

He was a member of the Arsenal team that won the FA Cup in 2014 and 2015 and also won the Community Shield the same year.

The midfielder also won Arsenal Player of the Season in the 2012–13, while he won the UEFA European Championship with his national team in 2008 and 2012.
