Ferguson receives goodwill messages as he recovers from a brain surgery

Alex Ferguson has been getting get-well-soon messages following the successful emergency surgery he underwent for a brain haemorrhage.

The 76-year-old was rushed to Royal Salford Hospital with a police escort on Saturday morning.

The 13-time Premier League winner was pictured at the Theatre of Dreams last weekend to hand long-time rival Arsene Wenger a gift on the Frenchman's final appearance as Arsenal boss at the stadium.

A statement from Manchester United read: "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.

"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."

Well wishes flooded in from former and current United players with other well wishers.

Beckham twitted: "Keep fighting Boss.. Sending prayers and love to Cathy and the whole family x"

Cristiano Ronaldo said: "My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend. Be strong, Boss!"

"Absolutely devastated to hear about Sir Alex being unwell in hospital. All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.Be strong." Michael Carrick twitted.

"Gutted to hear the news tonight about Sir Alex. Don’t really know what else to say other than thoughts and prayers with you and your family, Boss." Ashley Young said.

"Sending my love and best wishes to sir Alex." said Luke Shaw.

Ferguson famously won the Treble including the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1999.

The likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Nickky But.t and others were all part Fergie's golden generation as they went on to become regular in the England national team.

Since his retirement from the Manchester club, United have employed David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho as the team is yet to win the Premier League in the new era.

United are currently second on the table under Mourinho's tutelage as they are aiming for their best finish in a Premier League season in five years.
