Conte says he is shocked by Salah's form this season

- Antonio Conte says he is surprised by Salah's performance for Liverpool

- The Egypt international has scored 43 goals in 49 matches this season

- The 25-year-old will be making a return to Stamford Bridge against Chelsea

Antonio Conte has admitted he is surprised by the impact Mohamed Salah has had at Liverpool this season.

Salah joined Liverpool in the summer from Roma for his second spell in the Premier League, having previously flopped at Chelsea.

The Chelsea gaffer confessed he knew of Salah's quality after watching him play for Roma but did not expect the 25-year-old to do so well at Anfield.

Salah will play against his former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in a Premier League fixture.

Conte was asked if he has been surprised by Salah’s season and he replied: “I think this season for Salah is fantastic.

“We are talking about a really good player, I knew him in Italy but to wait for this type of season it would be very difficult to predict this type of season.

“We are talking about a character with a specific characteristic.

“I am seeing him very clinical. Every chance he has he takes the opportunity.”

The Egyptian has been the revelation of the season scoring 43 goals in 49 appearances and has being named the PFA Player of the Year.

The Blues who are fifth on the table are six points behind third-placed Liverpool going into this weekend’s fixture in London.

And the Italian knows his side must win to have any chance of catching Liverpool or Tottenham who occupy the Premier League top four.

Conte added: “This could be a good opportunity for us, but as I have said a lot of times if you want to keep the hope alive you have to win.

“Liverpool are a good team. It won’t be easy, we have to win on Sunday.”

The former Juventus manager has been rumoured to leave the club at the end of the season following their disappointing season.

However earning a Champions League spot for next season could secure his stay if Roman Abramovic gives him another opportunity.
