- Prince Val Oribhabor has revealed why the federal government is making moves to dredge the Warri port
- He said the approval of N13 billion for dredging the port is a political move
- According to him, such move has been the order of the day for the past three decades
The former financial secretary of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Val Oribhabor, has condemned the planned dredging of the Warri port.
Oribhabor said the N13 billion approved for the dredging of the port in Warri is a political measure by the federal government to woo the people of Delta state in the forthcoming 2019 general election.
Speaking with Vanguard on Thursday, May 3, Oribhabor said this has been the order of the day for the past three decades.
He also condemned the concession of the Terminal B of the old Warri port to a consortium of five different companies including Marine Infrastructure Consortium, Bright Ocean Integrated Services Limited, Ecomarine Consortium, Ocean and Cargo Terminal Services Limited and Neon Warri Ports Consortium.
“Concessioning is not the issue but dredging the old port to make it navigable for vessels to come in. That is the primary thing the government has been promising since 1976 when General Mahammed Magoro was the Minister of Transport.
"We have been hearing that it will be dredged and a particular amount approved for the dredging of the port over the years and nothing has happened. “It is part of the policy they have been using to destroy the Niger Delta.
"There is congestion in Lagos with nowhere to park and they have refused to divert them to other ports that are idle. “There is a new port that is empty and not functioning and they said they want to concession the old port, what about the companies that are already operating there?” he queried.
Legit.ng earlier reported that the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, had announced the approval of six new railway projects by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Amaechi the projects include the Kano-Katsina-Jibiya to Maradi in Niger Republic; the new standard gauge rail from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri passing through Enugu, Lafia, Makurdi, Gombe, with branches to Owerri, Onitsha, Awka, Abakaliki, Yola, Jalingo and Damaturu.

The minister also said that the rest of the projects are extension of the Itapke-Aladja (Warri) to Abuja and Warri Port; development of Railway Industrial Park in Port Harcourt and a proposal for railway connection to Bonny Island Deep Sea port from Port Harcourt.
