Buhari in Washington: Full text of George Bush address during his visit in 2003

- The former US president, George Bush, during his visit to Nigeria in 2003 made some powerful comments about the country's role in the development and growth of Africa

- Bush particularly pointed out that the then president of the nation, Olusegun Obasanjo has done much to tackle issues such as healthcare

- The US president also said that Obasanjo has contributed assisted in tackling challenges in Liberia

During his visit to Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, in 2003, the former United States president, George Bush made some insightful remarks concerning the country's role in bringing about growth and development in Africa.

Among other things, Bush remarked: "Nigeria is a very important country on the continent of Africa. And because of your forthrightness and your style and your commitment, you're a very important leader on this continent. And I'm honored to be here with you, The White House reports.

"I appreciate very much your commitment to trade and markets, and we look forward to being an active trading partner with Nigeria.

"I appreciate your commitment to regional peace, and we will work with Nigeria and ECOWAS on issues such as Liberia. I appreciate very much your focus on education, and the United States stands ready to help.

"But most of all, Mr. President, I appreciate your honesty and openness and forthrightness when it comes to battling the pandemic of AIDS.

"You're truly an international leader on this issue. And the United States of America, when Congress acts, will stand side-by-side with leaders such as yourself to fight the pandemic of AIDS to save lives.

"So, Mr. President, it's an honor to be here. I've been looking forward to this visit for a long time. I appreciate your leadership, and I appreciate your friendship."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the United States president, Donald Trump, had invited President Muhammadu Buhari to a meeting at the White House on Monday, April 30.

According to a statement released by the US government, Trump was expected to discuss issues such as promoting economic growth and fighting terrorism with the president.
