- The electoral body has explained its stance in the just concluded recall process of Senator Dino Melaye
- INEC said the commission is not in the position to ascertain any false signature on its register
- According to the spokesperson to the INEC chairman, the verification exercise is intended to look into the matter and make a determination
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it is not in the position to ascertain any false signatures in the just concluded recall process of the senator representing Kogi West senatorial district.
The chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said the electoral body could not different between fake signatures in its register.
Rotimi Oyakanmi while speaking at a Channels Television show on Monday, April 30, said INEC followed due process in the conduct of Dino Melaye's recall process in Lokoja on Saturday, April 28.
Oyakanmi said: “We are in no position to know which signature is false or is not false. And that exactly is what the verification exercise is intended to look into and then make a determination.
"INEC has demonstrated by what happened on Saturday that you cannot get through with an impacted situation and it was very clear that it would not pass that test because the verification showed very clearly that the petitioners did not have what it takes to enable us to go ahead with the referendum stage.
"If the number of signatures reached 50.1 percent, it implies that the commission would have gone ahead with the recall process by calling for a referendum, thereby sacking the lawmaker and paving way for the election of another senator representing the district."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that there was a low turnout of voters in the Saturday's recall process for Senator Melaye.
Most of the polling units visited during the exercise indicated that the process was marred by the presence of only few voters.
Some of the officials of INEC who spoke on the matter said the voters in the state failed to participate in the exercise.
The officials also said that many of the signatures received fro the voters did not match what they had on the official register.
