Islamic group places curse on gunmen who killed Catholic priests, others in Benue

- The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) condemns the killing of priests and worshippers at a Catholic Church in Benue state by gunmen

- MURIC says none of the killers should expect God's mercy over the heartless killings

- It pleads with IGP Ibrahim Idris and the federal government to bring the killers to justice

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has placed a curse on the gunmen who attacked St Ignatius Catholic Church, Ayar-Mbalom in Gwer East local government area of Benue state and killed two reverend fathers and other church members.

The gunmen, believed to be suspected herdsmen, had invaded the church and killed 15 worshippers including two Catholic priests, whose names were given as Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha.

“Although the attackers also burnt 50 houses and sacked the entire community, we are singling out the vicious attack on the church for strong condemnation.

“Those who attack the house of God have no single atom of piety in their hearts. They should therefore not expect mercy from Allah, the Supreme Creator.

“They seek to set different ethnic groups and religions at one another’s throats. But they will fail by the Grace of Allah,” the statement by MURIC said on Wednesday, April 25.

Signed by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC said it strongly condemns what it called “this wanton waste of human life. It is wicked, repulsive and barbaric.

“Human life is sacred and only Allah the Supreme Creator has the right to freely take what He gave. Therefore, killing for vengeance, religious or ethnic reason is not only primitive but also sinful.”

MURIC said it was constrained to observe that most of the killings around the middle belt part of Nigeria are ignited by hate speech.

“We therefore appeal to Nigerians to exercise caution in their utterances, to respect human life, tolerate and forgive one another.

“Every peaceful community is a round hole whereas vengeance is a square peg. It is therefore an alien instrument designed to cause commotion,” it said while charging the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to bring the killers of the worshippers to book.

The group also pleaded with the federal government to do everything possible to stop the carnage in the country, particularly in Benue and Taraba. earlier reported that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo declared that the federal government will not allow miscreants to stoke up a religious conflict by making it impossible for anyone to preach the gospel or even for Muslims to worship in their mosques.

A statement by Laolu Akande, his spokesperson, said Osinbajo stated this at the inauguration of the headquarters building and auditorium of the Deeper Life Bible Church in Gbagada, Lagos on Tuesday, April 24.
