Referee Yusuf Garba has landed in the hospital unconscious after he was beaten by fans in Monday's Nigerian League encounter between Heartland fc and Plateau United.

Abiodun Thompson opened scoring for the Naze Millionaires in the 21st minute but a late minute equaliser from Tosin Omoyele earned the visitors a point from that league match.

However, after the referee sounded the final whistle, the fans stormed the pitch to beat the match official to the level of comatose after the game.

Meanwhile, Plateau United have petitioned the League Management Company to sanction Heartland FC for an attack on the referee and some of their players.

“What happened yesterday in Owerri was an act of hooliganism. They (Heartland fans) attacked the referee and some of our players,” Yakup told CSN.

“We just hope the LMC will do the needful by applying the necessary sanctions.”

Earlier this season, Sunshine Stars have been sanctioned by the league organisers following their inability to control their fans from disturbing the peace of the game, as well as attacking the match officials.
