Governor Ambode set to unveil massive Gani Fawehinmi statue on Sunday, April 22

- The statue of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi will be unveiled on Sunday, April 22 in Lagos

- The state's commissioner for tourism, arts and culture, Steve Ayorinde, said that the unveiling ceremony will be to commemorate the 80th posthumous birthday of the legal icon and the human rights champion

- Ayorinde also said that the statue will be used to signal the state's respects for heroes of the state and country at large

The Lagos state government has said that it will on Sunday, April 22, unveil a new statue of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, at the beautiful park in Ojota named after the late legal icon and human rights champion.

In commemoration of the late activist’s 80th posthumous birthday, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, with family members of Fawehinmi, top human rights activists and other dignitaries across the state, will unveil the massive statue, the Punch reports.

Steve Ayorinde, the state's commissioner for tourism, arts and culture, in a statement, said the remodelling of the magnificent Gani Fawehinmi statue was part of the government medium to aid the beauty of public spaces and parks across the state and to celebrate and immortalise notable and noble personalities that contributed greatly to the development of Lagos.

Ayorinde also said that the building of the statue was also informed by the desire of the state government to project and entrench the enduring legacy of the country’s foremost human right lawyer, activist, philanthropist and one of the icons of pro-democracy movement in Nigeria.

He said: “Lagos State is proud that Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s courageous voice was loud enough for the world to take notice of socio-political developments in Nigeria.

"His fearless activism and constant interventions on behalf of the voiceless were legendary and helped ignite global interest on the plight of the masses and on Lagos as a liberal State that created an enabling environment for voices against oppression to be heard.”

The statue, 34-feet in length, will be one of the several iconic edifices that highlight the Ambode-led administration’s quest to transform the environmental outlook of the state, while also signalling the state's desire to honour past heroes in Nigeria.

Quoting Governor Ambode, Ayorinde said: "The relevance of Gani’s struggle for transparent and responsive governance remains the pillar of our progressive leadership in Lagos state."

Meanwhile, reported that Oba Babatunde Ogunlaja of Odo Noforija Kingdom in Epe had declared that all the royal fathers in Lagos were behind Ambode
