Breaking: 10 reportedly feared dead as gunmen sack Benue communities overnight

- Ten people have reportedly been killed as Benue communities were sacked by gunmen

- The gunmen were said to have invaded the communities on the night of Friday, April 20 and the morning of Saturday, April 21

- The sacked communities are Tse-Abi, Tse-Ginde, Tse-Peviv, Tse-Ikyo, Agenke and Gbenke

Officials and residents in Benue state have confirmed that 10 people were killed following attacks by gunmen.

In a statement sent to Legit.ng, a spokesperson for Governor Samuel Ortom, Terver Akase, said that the gunmen invaded Saghev ward of Guma local government area between the night of Friday, April 20 and the morning of Saturday, April 21, maiming and killing residents while also setting houses on fire.

He said: "I can confirm that Fulani herdsmen last night and earlier today invaded Saghev ward of Guma local government area, Benue state and killed many innocent persons.

"The attacked communities are Tse-Abi, Tse-Ginde, Tse-Peviv, Tse-Ikyo, Agenke and Gbenke. Ten corpses have so far been recovered with many others injured. The armed herdsmen also burnt numerous houses, shops and other property in the area.

"This mindless attack was unprovoked, and we urge security agencies to arrest the herdsmen behind the killings for prosecution."

The attack was also confirmed by two residents of Guma.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that dozens of locals were feared dead after suspected herdsmen attacked Umenger community in Guma local government area of Benue state.

It was reported that the attackers butchered several persons, including children and some village elders on Thursday, March 22. Among those killed in the latest attack were one James Apav and Ataki Mageri.
