Professor Bashir Usman who is the executive secretary of the National Commission for Nomadic Education has said that Nigeria has 22 million cattle which he said is equivalent to 10 oil wells.
Daily Trust reports that the professor spoke on Monday, April 16, at a two-day conference on “The Dynamic of Pastoral Nomadism in Contemporary Nigeria,” organised by the Federal University of Kashere, Gombe state.
According to Professor Usman, the figure makes up 50 percent of Nigeria’s national budget
He said the cattle business can help Nigeria in its diversification plans and can also help supplement revenue from oil. He said: “It is our hope that at the end of the conference, practical solutions would be proffered for implementation by both the federal, states and local governments respectively.”
Prof. Alhassan Mohammed Gani who is the vice chancellor of the institution said it was a way of contributing to the solution of the herdsmen/farmers crises.
Professor Gani said the expectation after the conference is, “to explore opportunities and support initiatives that will solve the continued herdsmen/farmers clashes in some parts of the country.”
