Sergeant to die by hanging for killing businessman

- A high court in Nasarawa state has found a police sergeant guilty of unlawfully killing a businessman

- The policeman, Sergeant Vincent Manu, has been sentenced to death by Justice James Abundega

- Sergeant Manu was found guilty of unlawfully killing Stephen Anakwe and labeling him an armed robber

A police sergeant, Vincent Manu, has been sentenced to death by the high court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa state, for unlawfully killing a businessman, Stephen Anakwe, and labeling him an armed robber.

Manu, who was arraigned alongside five other police officers, was sentenced on Friday, April 13, by Justice James Abundega.

Others arraigned with the police sergeant were Inspector Danladi Lenkem and Inspector Edula Ateku who died in the process of the trial, corporals Samson Magga and Musa Audu as well as Christopher Maikasuwa on a charge of criminal conspiracy to kill the deceased while they were on patrol, Daily Trust reports. notes that the offence was committed on February 13, 2012 when the deceased, who resided in Jos, travelled to Abuja where he socialised at a bar in New Nyanya, Karu local government area of Nasarawa state.

Justice Abundega, who rejected the defendant's plea of self defence, said that the prosecution was able to prove by cogent circumstantial evidence that the convict intentionally killed the deceased.

The other officers were, however, absolved of wrongdoing and were discharged and acquitted by the judge.

Meanwhile, previously reported that Inspector Samuel Timothy of the Nigerian Police was sentenced to death by hanging for shooting and killing a sachet water dealer, Onyekachi Nwasouba.

Nwasouba was branded an armed robber by the police while he was on his way to distribute his products to customers within the Port Harcourt metropolis.

Although the dealer was shouting that he was only a pure water producer and not an armed robber, a team of police officer led by Timothy shot him dead.
