I have made over N100m from kidnapping - Man confesses in Edo, disguises as herder

- Muritala Umaru, a kidnapper, has been arrested in Edo state

- In his confession to the state's police, Umaru said that he has made over N100m from his victims

- He said that he and his gang execute their victims if they refused to give them their demands

The Edo state police command on Tuesday, April 10, paraded a notorious kidnapper identified as Muritala Umaru, who confessed to have made over N100 million from kidnapping.

Also a herdsman, Umuru was arrested for being in possession of an AK-47 rifle and 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, Vanguard reports.

Umaru revealed that he began kidnapping four years ago in Okenne, Kogi states, having taken part in many other abduction in Edo. Muritala admitted to own some cattle and that his gang has 10 AK47 rifles with which they carry out kidnapping.

In his confession Umaru said: “One big man we call Chief in one community is the one that always gave us identities of victims before we strike.”

He further confessed to having realized N10 million from one of their victims. Concerning the fate of some of their victims, he disclosed that it was his boss that was responsible for their execution, when they refuse to yield to their demands.

He remarked: “I am married. I stay in Auchi, but I was born in Lokoja, Kogi State. I am into kidnapping. I have been into kidnapping for four years. I started in Lokoja. I have kidnapped over 50 persons.

“We kidnap them when they are travelling. There is one man that used to give us target. I collected N3 million in our last work. It is my oga that kill people. He has killed many people. We operate in Auchi, Ekpoma, Okenne and other places.

Babatunde Kokumo, the Edo state police commissioner, described referred to Umaru as an abductor, who passes off as one of the herdsmen.

Kokumo said: “The man has been in and out of prison. He has kidnapped in Edo and other states. The prison official he kidnapped identified him.”

Meanwhile, Idirisu Mohammed, a welder who was on Monday, April 9, rescued from kidnappers' den at Afuze in Owan East local government, has identified a herdsman, Abubakar Ilyasu as one of his abductors. Mohammed said Abubakar was sent by his abductors to buy food for them from town while they remained in the bush.

Mohammed revealed: “This one that was nabbed was sent to buy food. Before he came, the rescue team has arrived and the food was with him.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the police had arrested a notorious kidnap gang who abducted one Hadiza Husseini on Friday, January 19, and demanded for five hundred thousand naira (N500,000.00) for her release.

According to a press statement sent to Legit.ng by the force public relations office, CSP Jimoh Moshood, the incident took place at Anguwa Bala village in Karu local government area of Kaduna state.
