6 shot dead as rival cult groups battle in Ogun state

- There is apprehension in Ijebu - Igbo, Ogun state, following a clash between rival cult gangs

- The fracas was said to have erupted after two political meetings in the town

- Three people, believed to be members of the same family and some other people were reportedly killed

A cult clash between suspected members of rival cult groups in Ijebu - Igbo, Ogun state, has reportedly led to the death of six persons.

The Nation reports that the gun battle between the gangs began around 5.30pm on Sunday, April 8. It was reported that the gunfight lasted all through the night and escalated in the early hours of Monday, April 9.

The newspaper stated that while four persons were shot dead and several wounded during the clash on Sunday evening, two others got killed in a pre - dawn reprisal attack launched by one of the feuding cult groups.

The crisis was said to have caused fear among residents and visitors as many scampered for safety while some victims were caught in the crossfire.

Sources said the clash reportedly began in Ijebu - Igbo, the headquarters of the Ijebu north local government area, around 5.10pm shortly after two political meetings in the town by rival politicians in Ogun east ahead of the 2019 general elections.

A resident giving account of the killings said three persons, believed to be members of the same family were killed in front of their father’s house in Ojowo. The source said another was killed near the Amazing Graze Petroleum Station while two others were shot dead at Odobalogun, all in Ijebu - Igbo town.

Security agencies comprising of soldiers, operatives of the Federal Special Anti – Robbery Squad(F-SARS), anti-cult unit of the Ogun state police command, anti - riot policemen and regular armed policemen have reportedly been deployed to the town to restore order.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi state police command on Wednesday, April 4, said it destroyed a gun making factory in the state.

According to the command, it also recovered a cache of 146 prohibited firearms and assorted ammunition that were in possession of unauthorised persons in the state, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng notes that the recovery of the firearms was a result of the directive issued by the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, that all illegal firearms and ammunition in circulation nationwide be mopped up.
