Explosion rocks pharmaceutical company in Ife, leaves one dead

- One person has been feared dead as a result of explosion that rocked a pharmaceutical company in Ile Ife, Osun state

- The victim was said to have been trapped in the rubble when the building collapsed

- Residents said that an improvised explosive device was planted in the building

An explosion that rocked a popular pharmaceutical company in the Moore area of Ile Ife, Osun state, on Saturday, April 7, has left one person dead.

It was learnt that the explosion, which started around 10.30pm, started a fire and pharmaceutical products worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed, Punch reports.

Legit.ng notes that some of the adjoining buildings were said to have been affected by the explosion, while the area was cordoned off by the police.

Residents told newsmen that an improvised explosive device was planted in the building. A resident, simply identified as Tope, said that a victim, who he claimed was a relative of the owner of the building, was trapped in the rubble, adding that the victim had been badly injured when he was eventually removed by emergency management workers.

The Saturday explosion in Ile Ife destroyed a building and resulted in the death of one person

According to Tope, the victim was rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex where he died on Sunday.

Another resident, Tola, said: “The building came down around 10pm on Saturday. The owner of the building died in November 2017 and there was a crisis on the sharing of his property, which included the building.

“The workers at the pharmaceutical company closed around 8.30pm and we learnt that somebody sneaked into the building and planted the explosive. The injured man was taken to the OAUTHC where he died from the injuries he sustained. The victim was one of the owner’s family members."

The state police public relations officer, Folasade Odoro, said: “One Adebayo Seun of Moore Street, Ile Ife, reported at the ‘A’ Division that around 10.15pm, after closing their pharmaceutical shop, someone called him that there was a fire incident in their shop.

“As they turned back to Ife, they discovered that the whole equipment used in the pharmacy, drugs and other goods therein, valued at about N50m, were razed by fire, while the storeyed building also collapsed. The cause is unknown. No life was lost. Investigation is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that two people were confirmed dead in a building collapse in Agege local government area pf Lagos state.

The victims died when a building located at number 9 Abeje Street Markaz, of the area collapsed.

It was reported that the building had been marked for distressed by the Lagos state government before it caved in.
