As a father to three young women; a husband to a charismatic wife who is making great contributions in her own right; a colleague to a few but effective legislators; and a son — every day, I witness firsthand the strength and resilience of women. I see their impact in all areas of human endeavour, and testify to their resilience, their bravery, and their ability to get things done.

“Therefore, today, I join the world to press for progress and I recommit to pushing for more female participation in the economic and political processes of our nation.”

On its part, Say No Campaign Nigeria used the opportunity to recognize the auspicious role women have played in nation building across the globe and called on the federal government of Nigeria to do more to support the women by providing adequate protection and safe learning environment for the girl child as well as promote inclusive governance.

Women, especially African women, have overcome enormous challenges of cultural, economic, religious and political nature, and have made giant strides in overcoming them, impacting governance and occupying the highest position of authority in an African country. These are no lean feat for the once highly marginalised and exploited sect,” the group said in a statement sent to Legit.ng.

They urged governments, especially the Nigerian government to recognize the pivotal role of women in the socio-economic development of the society and address some of the challenges still faced by women in Nigeria, particularly, the abduction of school girls in the north eastern part of Nigeria, maternity death, incessant ra*e of the girl child and victims of communal clashes.

They also called on the National Assembly to consider a legislation that promotes the rights and protection of all women, pass the Gender Right Bill into law, and move the inclusion of women in governance.

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives, Danlami Kurfi, has moved to empower 2,000 women in Katsina state.
