Nigeria Customs discovers abandoned N51m Range Rover SUV in Ogun

The Ogun state area command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has said that it recovered a 2018 model Range Rover SUV inside a forest in Ifo local government where it was reportedly abandoned by smugglers as officials of the command approached them.

Sani Madugu, the controller of the command, said this on Thursday, February 22, at the Idiroko border in his speech with newsmen about the seizures made in the area. He said the car was among the 13 smuggled vehicles it has impounded recently, The Punch reports.

Madugu stated that this is ‘the seizure of the month’, adding that the vehicle has a total duty payable value of N51.2m.

He informed newsmen that the jeep has a keyless entry, accessible only with a remote control. Apart from the 13 impounded vehicles, Madugu said other seizures made from smugglers within the period were 1,168 bags of 50kg foreign rice, 221 kegs of vegetable oil, five sacks of second-hand shoes, and two sacks of second-hand bags.

He added that 12 additional vehicles and 21 motorcycles used to convey the bags of rice were also seized. He put the combined duty payable value of all the seizures at N153.86m.

In his narration of the attack on one of the operatives of the federal operations unit, serving in Idiroko border, Magudu warned the public that the command would not relent in its efforts to curb smuggling in the state.

He remarked: “We will continue to make seizures. We will not fold our arms while the smugglers kill or maim our operatives. I want to appeal to traditional rulers and other well-meaning elders in the state to talk to those involved in smuggling to look for other legitimate means of livelihood.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Nigeria Customs anti-smuggling unit, Zone A in Lagos had arrested ten smugglers who were in connection with N1.61 billion exotic vehicles, 6,444 bottles of Indian whisky packed in 537 cartons and other contraband goods.

The controller of the unit, Comptroller Mohammed Uba, said that the 31 vehicles, valued at N1.4 billion, were illegally imported into the country through the land border.
