Wedding ceremonies in Hausa land and how they are conducted

In every society of the world, relationship between people living together most especially between man and woman is not really accepted unless its foundation is based on marriage.

Before the coming of religions, every society conducted its wedding activities on strong ideals and according to its own culture. Like other societies, Hausa land has its own ways of conducting marriages.

How wedding is conducted in Hausa land

Because of the importance Hausa society places on marriage, there are many stages which are followed before finally reaching wedlock.

- Nagani inaso (the groom with his female friend and kinsmen will visit the bride’s family to make their intention known).

- Zance, soyayya (this stage can be called courtship period, the prospective couple will be allowed to see each other but with certain restrictions).

- Bincike (secret investigation by both families of the intending couple).

- Gaisuwa and sarana (after the approval of the groom by the bride, the bride’s parents will convey the good news to the parents of the groom “gaisuwa”).

Both families will then have a meeting to discuss the bride price “sadaki” and the wedding date “sa rana” Daurin sure (wedding fatiha).

The imam will then invite the representatives of both the groom and the bride for exchange. The bride's representative will give their daughter for marriage while in return the groom's representative will receive her.

Few days to the wedding day, parents and relatives of both sides (groom and the bride) will inform the public about the intended union of their children by distributing sweets and kola, or making an announcement.

With the changing times, invitation cards are now circulated or announcement are made through modern media outlets. Wedding is the final stage after which the bride is taken to the groom's house together with an old woman who will stay with the bride for a few days.

Wedding ceremonies include:

- kunshi (henna or beautification of the bride);

- yini (celebration in both houses);

- sayen baki, kamun ango, amarci and lastly gara.

The moment these ceremonies are over, the groom and the bride are left in their matrimonial home to live in patience with one another, and raise decent children for the rest of their lives.
