Buhari congratulates new South Africa president, promises mutual relationship

President Muhammadu Buhari, in the evening of Thursday, February 15, congratulates Cyril Ramaphosa on his election as the head of the government of the Republic of South Africa after the resignation of Jacob Zuma.

A terse statement from Garba Shehu, his spokesperson, said the president also felicitates with the African National Congress (ANC)), and the government and people of South Africa, on the peaceful transfer of power that resulted in the election of President Ramaphosa.

"The Nigerian leader salutes the leadership and statesmanship of former President Jacob Zuma, and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

"President Buhari looks forward to working with the new president of South Africa, and to enhanced cooperation of the governments of Africa’s two leading economies," the statement said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Cyril Ramphosa was elected as the president of South Africa after former president Zuma resigned as president on Wednesday, February 14.

Ramphosa was the only candidate nominated in parliament on Thursday, February 15, and the announcement was welcomed by singing in the National Assembly, BBC reports.

The party had told Zuma to step down or face a vote of no-confidence.
