Samuel Umtiti gives Barcelona condition to sign new contract

Samuel Umtiti gives Barcelona condition to sign new contract

- Samuel Umtiti is not ready to sign a new contract unless Barcelona will increase his pay

- He wants the Catalans to match the £103,000 a week offer from Manchester United

- The 24-year-old has a running contract with the Spanish side until 2021

France defender Samuel Umtiti has given his Spanish league side Barcelona the only condition that will make him renew his contract with the club.

The Frenchman joined the Catalans in a five-year deal around £23 million in the summer of 2016 from Olympique Lyon.

And the center back says he will only sign a new deal with the Camp Nou outfit if they are willing to match Manchester United's big-money offer.

The Premier League club have shown interest in the defender, whose contract with his present club expires in 2021.

But the 24-year-old insists he will not sign a new deal unless his La Liga club increases his pay to match United’s offers, who are willing to pay the defender £103,000 a week after tax and activate his £53.4million release clause in the January window.

And Barca officials, in a bid to stop the EPL outfit from signing the player offered him a contract extension until the 2023 or 2024 season. But the Frecnhman will not sign until they stump up the same cash as United.

Having spent just one and a half season at the Camp Nou since his arrival in 2016, Umtiti has proven to be a key member of the team with his superb performances at every opportunity he got.

Since it is a world Cup year, Barca chiefs are hoping they can get the player to extend his contract with the club before he could attract more suitors with superb display of his defensive prowess in Russia later this year.

Meanwhile, the likes of Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, and Sergi Roberto have already put pen to paper, extending their contract with the club to ensure they avoid distractions from any player anytime soon.

Umtiti kicked off his professional career with Lyon in 2011, and scored three goals in 131 appearances for the Ligue 1 club in his five year reign at the club. That was after spending over a decade in their academy.

And before joining Barcelona in 2016, he was a member of the France U20 team that won the Fifa U20 World Cup in 2013, and also featured for his country in the Euro 2016 championship – where they lost to Portugal by a slim margin.

He already has a goal to his name at his present club in 40 appearances in all competitions.
