Plateau governor fires 747 school teachers

- No fewer than 747 primary school teachers have been sacked by the Plateau state government

- The affected teachers did not present their certificates which qualified them to teach in public schools

- The government also retired those who had attained the maximum number of years of public service

The Plateau state government on Wednesday, February 14, announced the reinstatement of 141 teachers disengaged earlier and sacked 747 primary school teachers, Premium Times.

Legit.ng gathered that some of the teachers who lost their jobs are among those who failed to tender the minimum teaching qualification certificates as required by the state’s Teaching Service Commission.

Mathew Sule, who serves as the chairman of the state’s Universal Basic Education, disclosed this in Jos, the state capital, at a refresher course for officials in the education sector.

Sule said the teachers affected within the time stipulated for them did not present the basic certificates that qualified them to teach in public schools.

He said those who had attained the maximum number of years of public service were also retired.

On the 141 teachers reinstated Sule said they had met the requirements laid down by government.

In a previous report by Legit.ng, the Kaduna state government on Thursday, February 1, said it had increased the salary of public school teachers by 32.5 per cent.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state commissioner for education, science and technology, Ja’afaru Sani said at a news conference in Kaduna that 27.5 per cent salary increase would be added to all teachers while five per cent would be incentive for teachers posted to rural areas.

According to him, while headteachers would be entitled to three-bedroom accommodation, other teachers would have two-bedrooms flats in addition to motorcycles to ease their transportation challenges to schools.
