Jose Mourinho warns David De Gea's suitors to stay away

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has dismissed media reports claiming the club is open to selling David De Gea at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has been phenomenal since he joined the Red Devils in 2011 from Atletico Madrid – winning the club’s best player of the year twice, 2013-14 and 2014-15.

And the Portuguese-born tactician insists that to attract more world class players, they (United) have got to hold on to their current best players.

De Gea, who has made it into every Premier League PFA Team of the Year since 2012, signed a contract extension with the Premier League side after Real Madrid efforts to lure him away from the club failed in 2015 owing to a malfunctioning fax machine.

The Spanish national team goalkeeper still has a running contract until the summer of 2019, but United have the option to extend his term at Old Trafford by another year.

Do you think a club that is trying to attract the best players is the club that is open to sell the best players? It makes no sense,” he said, reports Sky Sports.

“If you want to go to that level, we have to attract the best players like we did with Alexis [Sanchez], [Nemanja] Matic, [Paul] Pogba and so on, and don’t let our best players go.”

And when asked about his former goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, Mourinho was quick to avoid the conversation, saying he doesn’t speak about his former players.

I don’t speak about Courtois,” he said.
