Spokesman insists IBB authorised ‘Vote out Buhari in 2019’ statement

- Kassim Afegbua, the spokesman of general Ibrahim Babangida insisted that his boss called on Nigerians to vote out President Buhari in 2019

- Babangida reportedly urged the president to sacrifice his personal ambition for national interest

Controversy has continually trailed as Kassim Afegbua, the spokesman of general Ibrahim Babangida has restated that the former military president approved the statement he issued, calling on Nigerians to vote out President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Daily trust reports that Afegbua maintained that IBB has not denied the statement.

According to him, ''The statement is in order. IBB did not hold any press conference in Minna. It was overzealous people that issued that statement of his denial.

''I wouldn’t issue any statement without his approval. Go ahead with the statement. I have spoken with him and he said he has not recanted the statement.''

It was learnt that Babangida in a press statement released on Sunday, February 4, by Afegbua, urged Buhari to sacrifice his personal ambition for national interest, while calling on Nigerians to vote out Buhari in 2019.

IBB was quoted in the statement: ''Let me categorically state that as former president and statesman, I have unfettered channel of communication with the highest authorities without sensational public correspondence, therefore those views expressed over there are personal views of the writer.''

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the inspector general of police Ibrahim Idris ordered the immediate arrest of the media aide of former military head of state Babangida.

IGP ordered that Kassim Afegbua be arrested if he fails to turn himself in to the police within 24 hours.

It was gathered that Afegbua is wanted by the police for "issuing a fake press statement to the public."

A source within the government, who does not want to be named, confirmed that the IGP had ordered Afegbua’s arrest within 24 hours.
