Presidential, National Assembly elections should not hold same day - Coalition for a New Nigeria

- Thirty political parties under the auspices of Coalition for a New Nigeria (CNN) want the 2019 general elections time table to be reviewed

- The group wants states Assembly and National Assembly elections to hold same day before the governorship and presidential polls

- CNN also notes that the governorship and presidential election should hold two weeks after the Assembly polls

Opposition parties numbering over 30 under the auspices of Coalition for a New Nigeria on Wednesday, January 31, after a leadership meeting in Abuja called for a review of the 2019 general elections time table.

Legit.ng gathered that the group is saying states Assembly and National Assembly elections should hold same day before the governorship and presidential elections to come two weeks after.

The Independent Electoral National Commission (INEC) had on Tuesday, January 9, released the 2019 elections time table, scheduling the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 16, 2019 and governorship and state legislative elections for March 2, 2019.

However CNN suggested that the states assembly and National Assembly elections should be held on February 16, 2019, while the governorship and presidential election should hold on March 2, 2019 to forestall the negative influence of bandwagon effect.

Members of the coalition formed in June 2017, include National Conscience Party (NCP), Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA), Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) Labour Party (LP), People’s Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Action Alliance (AA).

Others are Alliance for Democracy (AD), Democratic People’s Party (DPP), People’s Democratic Change (PDC), Better Nigeria People’s Party (BNPP), National Action Council (NAC), United Democratic Party (UDP) and Democratic Alternative (DA).

The national chairman of the coalition, who also the national chairman of Labour Party (LP), suggested the immediate setting up of a Government National Unity (GNU) that would include various shades of opinions and interests in the country.

In a previous report by Legit.ng, barely two weeks after former president Olusegun Obasanjo dismissed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and advocated for the formation of Coalition for Nigeria Movement, a movement was on Wednesday, January 31, launched at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

The coalition was quick to dismiss insinuation that it was rolling out Obasanjo’s script, adding that it is an independent movement aimed at moving Nigeria forward.

Former governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun state and Donald Duke of Cross-River state were among many notable politicians and youth leaders from across Nigeria who came together to launch a new movement, Coalition For Nigeria Movement.
