2017 in retrospect: NDLEA recorded 31 convictions of illicit drug dealers in Edo state

- Buba Wakawa, Edo state commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says 133 substance abuse cases are still pending at the state's Federal High Court

- Wakawa notes that 33 farms measuring 49.1 hectares allegedly meant for the cultivation of cannabis were destroyed across the state

- He further states that 11 vehicles and seven motorcycles used in conveying hard substances were seized

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo command, has said that it recorded 31 convictions of illicit drug dealers in 2017.

From Tribune's report, the state commander, Buba Wakawa, disclosed this in Benin on Tuesday, January 30. Wakawa made this known while speaking with news correspondents on the activities and success of the command in 2017.

Wakawa also said that 136 cases were pending in the Federal High Court in the state. He stated that 253 suspects were arrested within the time-frame, comprising 190 males and 63 females with suspected illicit drugs weighing 45, 341.04 Kilogrammes seized.

He said that the suspected drugs include cannabis Sativa weighing about 44, 217.5 Kilogrammes; psychotropic substances 1,122 kilogrammes; Cocaine 1,507 Kilogrammes and Heroin 0.02 kilogrammes.

The commander also said that 33 farms measuring 49.1 hectares with the cultivation of cannabis sativa were discovered and destroyed throughout the state.

Wakawa added that 11 vehicles and seven motorcycles used in conveying the drugs were seized. He said that 168 drug dependent youths were counselled and rehabilitated within the period under review.

Legit.ng reported that the Jigawa command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said on Thursday, January 25, that it arrested a 27-year-old man with five live ammunition and a set of military camouflage.

Also found on the suspect was a knife, a cellular phone and N1,000, the agency’s spokesman, Mairiga Ya’u, said in a statement in Dutse.
