Court cautions Misau against making comments in media against IGP

- Senator Misau has been cautioned against making comments against the police inspector- general

The senator representing Bauchi central senatorial district, Isah Misau, has been cautioned by the high court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja, against making further comments in the media on issues bordering on the charges for which he was being prosecuted.

The senator was re-arraigned by the federal government before the court on amended charges of spreading malicious falsehood of corruption and unethical practices against the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and others, Punch reports.

Shortly after Misau pleaded not guilty to the amended charges, Alex Izinyon (SAN), the lead prosecuting counsel asked the court to issue “a caveat” to the defendant on the need to stop making comments on the subject of the charges in the media.

“If that happens, I will come formally before this court,” Izinyon said.

After listening to Izinyon, Misau’s lawyer, Paul Erokoro (SAN), promised that his client would desist from make such comments.

“But we must also remember that the defendant is a senator,” Erokoro added.

The chief judge of the FCT high court, Justice Ishaq Bello, who is the trial judge urged the Erokoro to advise Misau.

“It’s your duty to wisely advise your client as rightly noted by the prosecution," the chief judge said:

“We know what the law says concerning comments as a senator.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Jabi on Monday, January 22, deferred its judgment on suit of enforcement rights filed by the Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris against the Nigerian Senate.

Justice Abba-Bello Muhammad deferred its decision following an application by the respondent counsel, Abdul Mohammed, against the proceeding.

Mohammed in the application argued that the applicant had failed to serve the respondents with the originating summons and other relevant processes in the suit.

The respondents are the Senate, president of the Senate Bukola Saraki, Senators Isah Misau, Francis Alimikhena, Binta Garba and Suleiman Hunkuyi.

The rest are Senators Duro Samuel, Ogba Obinna, Nelson Effiong, Abdulaziz Nyako.

The 4th to the 10th respondents were members of the ad-hoc committee that sat on the complaint of financial misappropriation in the police made by the third respondent.
