Gang suspected of torturing migrants arrested by security forces in Libya

- A gang accused of kidnapping and torturing migrants has been arrested

- The gang which is made up of five Libyans and one Palestinian were arrested by an armed group loyal to Libya’s national unity government

- The arrest of the suspected gang took place in Qaddahiya, a village south of Sirte in Libya

A gang accused of kidnapping and torturing Sudanese migrants near the northern city of Sirte was on Wednesday, January 24, arrested by an armed group loyal to Libya’s national unity government.

Daily Mail reports that the gang, made up of “five Libyans and one Palestinian had tortured eight migrants.

The migrants are now being treated at the Ibn Sina Hospital in Sirte, 450 kilometres (280 miles) east of Tripoli, the Sirte Security and Protection Force said.

The security forces said the arrests took place in Qaddahiya, a village south of Sirte, “after the publication of a video on social media showing scenes of African migrants undergoing unbearable torture.”

The video shows the migrants being severely burned by their captors, who demand ransoms from their families.

The eight kidnapped migrants were released, the pro-government force said.

According to an earlier report by Legit.ng, the Libyan government arrested one Maria Oda for running a human trafficking business in the country.

The Nigerian government has been making efforts to bring back its citizens stuck in Libya due to human trafficking.

The Nation reports that Oda who is also known in Tripoli as Hajiya Aisha is believed to have trafficked more than 80 girls from Nigeria to Libya.
