- The APC has reportedly agreed on a second term for President Buhari
- The party made the decision after an extensive meeting of stakeholders
- The stakeholders reportedly believe that only Buhari can keep the party together beyond 2019
The stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reportedly decided to field President Muhammadu Buhari as the party's presidential candidate in the 2019 election.
According to an investigative report by Sunday Tribune, some of the stakeholders were thinking of a second option but changed their mind when it seems the president would be running for a second tenure.
A stakeholder of the ruling party who spoke to the press said: “Notwithstanding the widespread call on Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019, the reality in the APC is to the contrary. We have seen that the unity of the party cannot be guaranteed without Buhari. The interests are just too diverse."
Another source claimed that the party agreed on Buhari because they believe he is the only one that can keep the party from breaking up or experience leadership crisis beyond 2019.
A source reportedly said that a huge battle that would overtake the APC in the absence of a Buhari candidacy would pitch the party’s national leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, against the like of Governors Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Kaduna and Sokoto states, as well as Senate President Bukola Saraki against one another.
