PDP reacts to emergence of factional group

- The PDP has said it was not bothered by the new splinter group

- It said the party's reconciliation committee was working towards uniting the party

- It expressed optimism that the party will reclaim power in 2019

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the emergence of a factional group insisting it will not be distracted by it.

Report had surfaced that a new faction of the PDP, known as the Fresh PDP has emerged. The emergence of the new faction of the PDP is believed to be as a result of the fallout from the recently concluded elective national convention of the party in which some candidates said to be on the unity list were elected.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 20 by the party’s publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondinyan, the PDP said it was unperturbed by the development.

The party claimed that the factional group was being used by forces outside the PDP and expressed optimism that the Uche Secondus leadership will continue to work for the growth of the party.

Read the party statement below:

"The PDP is completely unperturbed by the comical act of some individuals who make outlandish claims in the media regarding our party.

"The fact is that we are happy with the efforts of the Governor Seriake Dickson-led Reconciliation Committee as well as the responses from all the respectable and responsible leaders of our party in that regard.

"We will however not be responsible or respond to any person or groups of individuals who decide to allow themselves to be used by forces from another political party in a laughable and childish attempt to distract us.

"The PDP under the Prince Uche Secondus-led national leadership will continue to focus on repositioning our great party to be the formidable opposition that will guarantee checks and balances in our polity and ultimately regain power in 2019."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the PDP invited all the aspirants in its just concluded national convention to a special meeting at the party’s headquarters, Abuja.

The statement on the party’s twitter page revealed that the meeting would be held on the second week of January next year.

In the related development, the deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, charged the newly elected members of the National Working Committee of the PDP to ensure transparent and credible primaries ahead of the 2019 general election.
