Nigeria's first ever individual gold medalist at the Olympics Chioma Ajunwa has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police

Ajunwa itched her name in history at the Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games with her victory in the long jump event.

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the promotion of the former long jumper.

The 47-year-old defied the odds to become the first and only athlete in Nigeria to win an individual Olympic gold.

Ajunwa is also the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold in a field event. She is currently serving at the Police Training School, Ikeja, Lagos.

The Police Public Relations in the state, SP Chike Oti, who confirmed the new to The Punch said: “The former gold medalist has been promoted to the rank of ACP. She is with the PTS.”

She emerged victorious in the women's long jump event at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, with a jump length of 7.12 meters (on her first attempt) during the final.
