- US president, Donald Trump, has announced the official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by his country, and has directed that the US Embassy be moved to the holy city
- The move comes in spite of great opposition from the international community and the US’ allies in the Muslim world
- Mahmoud Abbas, president of Palestine, had previously warned that any such move would have dangerous consequences for the Middle East
President Donald Trump has announced that Jerusalem would now be recognized as the capital of Israel by the United States of America, BBC reports.
Trump announced the decision in a speech at the White House on Wednesday, December 6.
Legit.ng gathers that the US president stated that the development would advance the Middle East peace process and that it was ‘long overdue’.
He further disclosed that if approved by both the Israelis and the Palestinians, the US would support a two-state solution.
He stated that he had "judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America, and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.”
Consequently, Trump has directed the US State Department to begin the process of moving the US Emabassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Ahead of the decision however, the US president was warned that the decision would have dangerous consequences for the region, by the spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine.
Trump’s decision comes despite great opposition from US's allies in the Muslim world.
Israel annexed East Jerusalem after the Six Day War of 1967, and the city is not recognized by the international community as being part of the Jewish state.
