Breaking: Court orders arrest of Nnamani

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the arrest of former governor of Enugu state, Chimaroke Nnamani.

Premium Times reports that the former governor had failed to appear in court and Justice Chuka Obiozor issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The judge on Monday, December 4, said the defendant’s lawyer had failed to provide reasonable evidence for his client’s absence in court.

The defendant’s lawyer had presented pictures claiming his client had undergone heart surgery in the US but the prosecutor argued that the photographs were taken in 2014.

Recall that the court had fixed December 4, 2017 for the re-arraignment of Nnamani who was charged with alleged fraud of N5.3bn.

Justice Chuka Obior could not proceed with the case due to the absence of both the prosecutor, Kelvin Uzozie and Nnamani, who was said to be out of the country.

A lawyer from the chambers of Rickey Tarfa (SAN), M. Bamidele, announced appearance for Nnamani, but said the ex-governor was not in the country.

Bamidele said the notice for the hearing was received six days ago by his law firm, saying it was too short to contact Nnamani who was not in the country.

Legit.ng had previously reported that the national Christian elders forum called on the Peoples Democratic Party, to stop sending former governors who mismanaged the resources of their states to the Senate.

The forum made this known while paying a courtesy call on the national leadership of the PDP at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

The forum was led by Solomon Asemota, its chairman who said that it was unfortunate that former governors who looted their state treasuries are the ones making laws for the nation presently.
