Atiku calls for investigation into harassment allegations against SARS

- Atiku says the Police IG Ibrahim Idris should look into the allegations against SARS officials

- The former vice president also called on the National Assembly to investigate the matter

- He also praised Nigerian youths for speaking out against the harassment by the police anti-robbery unit

- Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood has since said there was no need to scrap SARS because it was doing quite well

Former vice president Abubakar Atiku has called for investigations into allegations of harassment leveled against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement issued in series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle on Sunday, December 3, Atiku, a former Nigeria Customs Service top chief, noted that the allegations must be taken seriously by the police and the National Assembly.

While urging the two institutions to look into the allegations, he saluted Nigerian youths who have started an hashtag movement on social media to raise awareness about the allegations.

He tweeted:

On its part, the Nigeria Police Force has moved to address the matter.

The Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) has swiftly introduced channels through which those who have complaints against SARS can lay them.

The Unit released the complaint channels in a post on its official Facebook handle on Saturday, December 2.

The SARS unit has come under heavy criticism for its handling of police duties in recent times.

The allegations leveled against SARS officials include physical harassment and extra-judicial killing. reported recently that a former minister also accused an officer of the unit of manhandling a woman and murder.

The ex-minister also accused the SARS official of carrying out various illegal activities against Nigerians.
