Nigeria needs to stop all this competitive religiosity - Aisha attacks FG for declaring public holiday

One of the co-conveners of Bring Back Our Girls group, Aisha Yesufu, has condemned the public holiday declared by the federal government to mark the Eid-El-Maulud celebration.

Describing the holiday as wasteful, she queried when Nigeria started celebrating Maulud.

Aisha said Nigeria needs to focus on doing good for humanity rather than engage in “competitive religiosity”.

In her tweets, she wrote: "Nigeria and our need for wasteful holidays. Which one is public holiday for Maulud? When did we start celebrating Maulud? When do we stop all this "competitive religiosity" and focus on doing good for humanity?

According to her, the first Maulud to be a public holiday in Nigeria was declared for Monday, March 9, 2009 by Godwin Abbe, then minister of interior under late Yar’Adua’s administration.

In reaction, some Nigerians agreed with her that it was a total waste while others criticised her.

December 1, set aside to celebrate Eid-El-Maulud, Prophet Muhammed's birthday, was declared a public holiday by the federal government.

This was contained in a statement sent to Legit.ng by the permanent secretary in the ministry of interior, Engineer Abubakar G. Magaji.

According to the statement, the minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (rtd), made the declaration on behalf of the federal government.

The minister enjoined all Muslim faithful and Nigerians to use the Eid-El-Maulud Celebration to pray for peace, progress and unity of the nation.
